Key West
Located closer to Cuba than to Miami, measuring only four miles long, two miles wide and loaded with a rhythm and charm of its own is Key West. Known for its live- in- the moment attitude, quirky culture, tropical climate, and seemingly never ending happy hour, this tiny island is a world of its own in the Southernmost part of the United States. Key West has been welcoming visitors seeking an escape from the normal for centuries and escaping is exactly what we all need right about now. With its azure waters, palm trees, island architecture, and lush vegetation Key West feels like a Caribbean getaway. This time of year temperatures are warm enough to escape the chill of winter. Also, since cruise ships are not operating tourist crowds are low allowing you to truly enjoy the island.
For such a small island there is much to do. The tropical blue waters are a playground for boaters, divers, snorkelers and fishermen. Shipwrecks and reefs are home to hundreds of species of tropical and game fish. Another wonderful water adventure is kayaking along the mangroves of Key West. Whether you choose snorkeling on a catamaran, an adventurous night dive on a shipwreck or kayaking along miles of mangroves you’ll be amazed at the sea life in Key West.
Make your Key West weekend unforgettable by embarking on a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park and Jefferson Fort. Located 70 miles west of Key West lay a cluster of seven islands, composed of coral reefs and surrounded by emerald green waters. The area is known for its natural beauty, marine life and its legends of pirates and sunken gold. Arrive by seaplane or by Ferry.
If you prefer to stay dry, there is also plenty to do onshore. The best way to experience the island’s treasures is without a doubt by bicycle. Bike along the wide, palm tree lined streets to the historic Old Town, visit the island’s most famous resident-Earnest Hemingway’s House and Museum, have a picnic at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, take a selfie at the Southernmost Point marker of the Continental United States and finish your day sipping a margarita as you watch the famous Key West sunset at Mallory Square.
After a day of exploring there are plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy a night on the town. Find well known watering holes like Sloppy Joe’s Bar which opened its doors on the day the alcohol prohibition ended on Dec 5, 1933 and has been grooving ever since. A sweet ending to your day, a slice of key lime pie.
